POWER MINISTER INSPECTS IMPACT OF 90kWp REA-NEP SOLAR HYBRID MINI-GRID PROJECT

The Honourable Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, paid a visit to Adafila, Oyo State on the 15th of January 2024, to assess the impact of the 90kWp solar hybrid Mini grid deployed by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) through the Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP). This visit underscores the Ministry’s dedication to promote rural electrification and sustainable energy access in Nigeria.

Adafila, located in the Ogbomosho area of Oyo State, is renowned for its vibrant agricultural economy and dynamic commercial activities. Recognizing this potential, REA through the NEP’s Performance Based Grant (PBG) facilitated solar hybrid mini-grid installation with grant support. The solar hybrid mini-grid, with a capacity of 90kW (Solar PV) and a storage capacity of 200kWh, has successfully been implemented to independently provide reliable electricity to over 1,300 households, clinics, schools, and businesses.

During the inspection, the Minister, Chief Adelabu expressed his satisfaction with the positive impact the project has had on the community, stating that it aligns with the government’s commitment to delivering reliable and sustainable electricity to underserved areas.

Engr. Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad, the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), emphasized the success of the project as a testament to REA’s commitment to pursuing innovative and sustainable energy solutions for rural communities. REA through the NEP played a pivotal role by providing grant incentives to enhance the project’s viability.

Abba Aliyu, Head of Project Management Unit of the NEP, expressed gratitude for the success of the World Bank-funded NEP Performance-Based Grant subcomponent. The Adafila project, which has been operational for over two years, have provided clean energy to over 1,300 households, clinics, schools, and businesses. Additionally, the NEP-PBG has supported the deployment of over 100 solar hybrid mini-grids nationwide.

He further appreciated all contributors and urged the Adafila community, especially its leaders, to protect this national asset against vandalism.

The project in Adafila marks another key milestone in Nigeria’s journey to improved access to clean and reliable energy, showcasing the potential of renewable energy in empowering rural areas and driving national development.
