The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) is an agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN), established by Section 88 of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act (EPSRA) 2005, with the mandate to promote and increase access to electricity to unserved and underserved rural communities across Nigeria.
The core objective of the REA is to promote and implement electrification initiatives which include an off-grid electrification strategy to complement the national grid supply by developing a decentralized approach to power generation, distribution, and metering that are economically viable, demand-driven, market-oriented, and private-sector driven.
The FGN has subsequently tasked the REA with the responsibility of implementing the Nigeria Electrification Project.
